About

The Lighthouse Station

The Wilson's Promontory Lighthouse is situated on a small rocky outcrop jutting out into Bass Strait and is a tiny bastion of civilization in rugged surrounds and wild seas.

Built in 1859, the lighthouse is the Australian mainland's most southerly permanent settlement (2 Parks Rangers live on site), and is only accessible to the general public by foot.

Three of the lighthouse keeper's cottages have been painstakingly restored, furnished handsomely with the latest mod-cons, and made available as accommodation for hikers. It is isolated luxury at its best and bookings are essential.

It is an approximate 20km walk through tea tree scrub, beaches, mountains and rainforest to get to the lighthouse so you do need to be moderately fit to complete the journey. The reward is well worth it however as you get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

This Website

The Wilson's Prom Lighthouse has long and unique history stretching back to its construction by convict labourers in 1853, through both world wars and its gradual transformation to its current form. A lot of this history is sitting in old books, photos and other documents stored at the lighthouse and other locations.

This website aims to gradually collate this information into an easily accessible online form that is available to everyone.
